Casting Tina proved to be the bigger challenge. Johar had written the part for his best friend Twinkle Khanna. But when she refused to do it, he asked every leading actor — Karisma Kapoor, Tabu, Shilpa Shetty, Aishwarya Rai, Raveena Tandon, and Urmila Matondkar — who all turned down the part, unhappy with playing second fiddle to Kajol.
Chopra and Khan were the ones who suggested Rani Mukerji, impressed by her acting in Raja Ki Aayegi Baraat (1997). After Johar narrated the film’s first half, Mukerji, also crying, asked Johar one question: “How are you going to convince the audience that Shah Rukh chooses me over Kajol?” Johar thought about her query and told her: “Just trust me and go with it.” Mukerji, then 17, did exactly that. She turned in a scene-stealing, breakout performance.
