Preity Zinta, known for her forthright characters, was born in Shimla. Her foray into acting was an accident. She had accompanied a friend to an audition, where director Shekhar Kapur noticed her and asked if she would audition as well. Kapur recommended her for her debut “Dil Se…” (1998) to director Mani Ratnam, and the rest is history.
“Dil Se…” was the first Hindi film to break the U.K. box office top ten. Though Zinta had only 20 minutes of screen time, her character left an indelible mark. Who can forget Preeti Nair asking Shah Rukh Khan’s character if he’s a virgin? Zinta won a Filmfare for Best Female Debut in part for the role, and she and Shah Rukh Khan would go on to collaborate on several more hits.
The 2000s shot Zinta to stardom with roles that broke taboos, starting with “Kya Kehna” (2000), in which she played a single teen mom, and “Chori Chori Chupke Chupke” (2001), where she plays a sex worker and surrogate mother. “Salaam Namaste” (2005) also broke barriers; in the film, Zinta depicts a woman who co-habitates with her partner and accidentally gets pregnant. Zinta also starred in 2004’s “Lakshya,” in which she portrayed a character heavily inspired by real-life journalist Barkha Dutt.
Zinta has also helmed several global hits, such as “Dil Chahta Hai” (2001) and “Koi…Mil Gaya” (2003). In “Kal Ho Naa Ho” (2003), set in New York, Zinta plays the strong-willed Naina, an MBA student who sees life as unfair when an enthusiastic Aman traipses into her life. Zinta also worked with Shah Rukh Khan in diaspora hits “Veer Zara” and “Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna.”
2008 saw Zinta star in Deepa Mehta’s “Heaven on Earth,” which centers domestic abuse in the Indian Canadian diaspora.
Zinta is also a co-owner of Indian Premier League cricket team Punjab Kings and T20 South African team the Stellenbosch Kings. In 2020, she broke into U.S. television, in an episode of “Fresh Off The Boat,” along with comedian Vir Das. In 2021, she welcomed twins via surrogacy, and currently lives in California.
